5 Tips for Managing Stress at Your Miami Job

Tip #1. Prioritize your tasks.

The easiest way to prioritize your tasks is to list them, rate them in order of importance, then list them again in that order. When you’re rating your tasks, make sure to ask yourself questions like “Can I delegate this task to someone else?” and “What are the consequences of not getting this task done?” Attack the high priority, mission-critical tasks first. When you have time, work on the tasks that are less pressing.

Tip #2. Just say “no.”

There’s only so much you can get done in a day and over-committing yourself will cause you added stress. Period. So if you’re guilty of over-scheduling, then you must learn to say “no.” If you don’t, you’ll end up spreading yourself too thin and you won’t be able to get anything done – at least not on time or well.

Also, when you are scheduling your tasks, make sure to give yourself plenty of time between each appointment or meetings. Many times, meetings can run over and you’ll just get stressed out if you know you have someone waiting for you, or if you have to run from one appointment to the next.

Tip #3. Leave earlier.

Running late to work is stressful and it sets the tone for the rest of your day. So leave your house 10 or 15 minutes earlier than you usually do each morning. Instead of rushing around frantically, you’ll get to work with plenty of time to spare.

Tip #4. Take a break.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but taking breaks can actually make your more productive, not less. Working without taking a break will eventually hit a point of diminishing returns and could even lead to you making a big mistake. On the other hand, taking 30-60 minutes for lunch (away from your desk!) or taking a few 10-15 minute breaks throughout the day will help you maintain your energy.

Tip #5. Commit to living a more balanced life.

In today’s economy, achieving a work-life balance can seem more difficult than ever. But keep in mind that if you put all of your energy into work, you’ll eventually burn out. Not a good situation for you, your employer, or your career. So try to live a more balanced life. Take small steps at first, like spending more time with your family, participating in a hobby you love, or going out with friends one night a week.
